Maitake's main active constituent is the polysaccharide2 beta (1-6)-glucan. D-fraction is a derivative of the high molecular weight polysaccharides of Maitake (1,000K Da m.w.)3.

D-fraction is composed of beta (1-3) glucan branched with beta (1-6) glucosides
4 which is believed to be responsible for many health benefits5 of Maitake.

Traditional use

Maitake have been used for many centuries in China and Japan for cooking and as a medicinal mushroom to promote general health.

Pharmacological and clinical research

Recent studies indicate that D-fraction may enhance the body's ability to fight bacterial infections. This research suggests potential benefits of using D-fraction for anti-bacterial treatment6.

Japanese study of the effect of Maitake D-fraction on mice showed significant reductions in cancer growth. The benefits were shown to increase further when combined with traditional chemotherapy and reduced some common side effects of chemotherapy7.
